  • FAQ's - Motorola Mobile Phone Tools

If the phone cannot be communicated with for syncing, or MPT can't find the phone, what's the first option to troubleshoot (device manager, modem diagnostic, etc)?

Check to see if the phone is listed and queries as a modem.

In the Windows task bar, click the Start menu and select the Settings> Control Panel.
    The Control Panel window opens.

  • Click on Phone and Modem Options.
  • Select the Modem tab and look for Motorola USB Modem.
  • If it lists Motorola USB Modem and shows a COM port assigned to it then left click on the modem to highlight it and select properties.
  • Select the Diagnostics tab and left click on Query Modem.
  • The response for AT+GMM on the query should indicate the device that is responding to the query.
  • If the query worked then the phone is connected and you will want to check the settings for communication in mobile PhoneTools.
  • If the Query fails please continue troubleshooting as follows.

  • Make sure the correct drivers for the phone are installed. To verify if the driver files (.INF) were copied to the correct location, check the following:
  • Windows 2K/2000: USBMOT2000.INF to C:\WINNT\INF
  • Windows XP: USBMOT2000.INF (the same driver file as Win2K) and goes to WINDOWS\INF directory.
  • Windows ME/9x: USBMDMMOT.INF and USBCDCMOT.INF to C:\Windows\INF

In the Windows task bar, click the Start menu and select the Settings> Control Panel. The Control Panel window opens.
  • Click System to open the System Properties Window.
  • Select the Hardware Tab from the top of the window.
  • Click on the button for Device Manager.
  • Connect the phone to the PC with the USB cable.
  • Allow the PC to incorrectly install the device or devices it wants to setup when the phone is connected.
  • Watch for changes in the Device Manager under the categories Modem, Other, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • In the Device Manager, if the phone is not installed properly, the phone is usually listed twice under Other as "Unknown Device" or "Motorola Phone" and once as "Composite Device" under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Remove all incorrectly installed devices from device manager but leave the phone connected to the PC.

Reboot your PC - the phone will be seen properly and the PC will now finish the install properly.

  • FAQ's About Cell Phone Batteries

What does Original or OEM mean?
Original or OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer (Made by the same company who manufacturers the cell phone).    Back to Top

What are the different types of cell phone batteries?
Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) cell phone batteries are used for almost all cell phones on the market currently. Lithium Ion batteries are light weight and have about 1/3 more energy output than Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) which makes Lithium Ion batteries the economical choice for your cellular phone.
Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) cell phone batteries are less commonly used in todays cellular phones. Nicket Metal Hydride Batteries will develope some Memory Effect, and perforn best wiht use of a desktop charger to ensure the complete the NiMN battery is completely drained before re-charging.    Back to Top

Are Ni MH batteries memory free?
No, they are 'reduced memory' batteries. Ni MH have a memory effect build up just like Ni Cd, but it takes longer to build up.    Back to Top

How often should I condition my batteries?
A Ni Cd battery will build up a memory fairly quickly, so we recommend discharging or conditioning the battery after every two charges.
A Ni MH battery will build up a memory slower than Ni Cd, so we recommend discharging or conditioning the battery after every six charges.    Back to Top

Can I condition my battery by leaving on the phone until it shuts off?
Your phone eventually shuts off because the battery's output voltage has dropped too low to keep the phone powered on. There is still about 3-7% of the total stored energy left over inside the battery. This is remaining energy that must be drained out regularly, to keep your batteries lasting longer, providing more talk/standby time.    Back to Top

Care and Maintenance of Your New Cellular/PCS Battery

Ni MH And Ni Cd Batteries:
Please read through this page carefully in order to familiarize yourself with these two kinds of batteries. Ni MH and Ni Cd batteries require some simple maintenance in order to keep them operating at peak capacity These steps will ensure a long life for your new battery.    Back to Top

    Charging:
Ni MH batteries may require the use of a Ni MH battery charger. Fast charging a Ni MH or Ni Cd: In order to rapid charge a Ni MH battery, you will require a charger rated to charge Ni MH batteries. Failure to do so will result in irreparable damage to the battery and will void your warranty. We have a fill range of Ni MH rapid chargers available. Do not use a Ni Cd fast charger with a Ni MH battery. The Ni MH battery will become very hot, and damage may occur within the battery. Regular Ni Cd fast chargers work well with Ni Cd batteries only. Never use a Ni Cd fast charger with Ni MH or lithium. If possible, slow charge the Ni Cd battery as often as possible. This will aid in prolonging the batteries overall service life.    Back to Top

Slow charging a Ni MH or Ni Cd battery:
Ni MH batteries may be slow - charged, with any type of Ni MH or Ni-Cd overnight charger without damaging the battery. If you have any doubts about whether or not your charger is capable of charging Ni MH batteries, contact the manufacture of your charger, or the store it was purchased from, and ask if itts rated to charge Ni MH batteries. A regular Ni Cd slow charger can safely charge any Ni MH. Slow charging will not overheat Ni MH.    Back to Top
